Little Bit of This and That...

Call me Betty or Martha, whichever... Here is my attempt at making baby food. Production is on and I still think Rae Ann is amazing for thinking this stuff up. Carsten loves it and goes for it with gusto!

These two don't *play*, they are always *working* according to Reese. "Carsten, you want to work with me?", "Mommy, you want to help me build?"

Carsten has four teeth now and today looks the most painful as the tooth works it's way down... He is gnawing on everything.

I know some of the containers are big, but I didn't have very many small ones. I went and got some smaller ones the other day. I thought about putting it in zip locks, but then wouldn't you lose quite a bit when you went to get it out? In the picture are the sweet potatoes, a new batch with orange sweet potatoes, and butternut squash...

I haven't actually mady any baby food but I read about someone putting the food in ice cube trays and freezing it that way... Seems like a good way to have Carsten sized portions of food! Just a thought!

I have used ice cube trays with both my children and I love it! I steam peas, cook carrots in a little chicken and vegetable broth, and steam or bake squash. Then I grind up each vegetable separately, fill the ice cube tray, then dump them into a ziploc bag when they're frozen. I also take leftover chicken or beef soup and grind it up (minus meat for now) and do the same. My pediatrician said no problem as far as the spices... "kids in India eat off the table; they don't have Gerber over there!" Then I can take out a beef soup cube and a carrot cube, thaw them, add some potato flakes or oatmeal to thicken, and voila! Dinner for one! Just add bib!

Dana-
You may also want to try "Better Baby Food", the girl who takes care of Grady gave it to me and from what I have seen it looks great. Another helpful item to have is the "Magic Bullet", yeah its one of those infomercial items, but is great for baby food prep. I think Target has is on sale this week (at least in SD). Maybe there should be a Thyme in the Kitchen section for baby food? :)

the only problem i have with making the cubes is that they're too small. i think they work well in the beginning, but for how much work it is to fill and rotate the trays, i would rather use larger plastic containers or ziplocs. we use ziplocs over here. in order to get all of the food out, i thaw it in the fridge overnight and then i snip off a bottom corner and squeeze the food into a plastic container to be stored in the fridge. by sniping and squeezing, i get nearly all of the little bits of food out of the bag. it's much easier since we go through the baby food so quickly.
